Patient-safe sedation — challenges and opportunities

An invited congress lecture by Professor Jonas Åkeson on keeping procedural sedation safe as it becomes ever more common across medical and dental settings. The talk reviews why serious complications are more frequent during sedation than during general anaesthesia — especially when sedation is performed by staff without anaesthesia training — and argues that almost all serious sedation complications could be avoided through good airway management, continuous CO₂ monitoring, adequate oxygenation and careful patient observation.
It closes with the group's work in Malmö on a newly developed airway aid for sedation, evaluated during moderate-to-deep steady-state sedation of healthy volunteers in preclinical pilot studies, with preliminary results showing significantly higher tidal volumes than with a bite-block and fewer episodes of respiratory arrest than without any aid.
